The delayed top flight showdown between 1TM and Viking Vets took place in Turf City on a humid Saturday afternoon. The Vikings team fielded a strong side hoping to put pressure on 1TM in their quest for league glory.
As the game started it was obvious that this would be a very competitive game. Both teams consisted of very decent footballers and with such opposition there was little room for error. 1TM applied high pressure but the Vikings were good at using the entire width of the pitch switching the ball from side to side. The first big chance fell after a ball was not cleared properly and a 1TM midfielder was allowed to release a very good shot from outside the box. Fortunately, for the Vikings, the ball whistled past the right side post.
Both teams played the ball around very well and only some good defensive game prevented several scoring opportunities. 1TM was the first team to successfully pick up a through ball and their striker was suddenly alone with Rene. As the striker made the shot on goal Rene had already rushed out and closed most angles. With a great left footed save Rene kept the score line at 0-0.
Soon after there was action in the other end as one of the 1TM defenders missed a clearing. Stabel was hoping for exactly this and found himself alone with the keeper. To everyone’s surprise Stabel made a cool right footed, yes right footed, chip over the keeper to give the Vikings the lead.
1TM kept pushing and won a few freekicks near the Viking box but none of the shots had sufficient power to surprise Rene in the goal. Also a few corner kicks flew into the Viking box but the neither lead to much danger. During one of the corners the bulky 1TM striker had a wrestling competition with Moberg. For some reason the striker lost his head, lashed out, and hit Moberg in the face. The referee did not see this action, which deserved a red card. Things got a little bit heated and a bit of unnecessary foul mouthing followed.
Raven put in some good challenges during the game but also arrived late with a tackle on the skillful 1TM midfielder. A definite yellow but immediately admitting being at fault must have made the referee find sympathy for the unusually honest player.
The Vikings slowly started to get better control of the game and fresh sub Morten dribbled the ball up the left side. Approaching the defensive line he lobbed the ball over defense to an onside John, the man that just never disappoints. A few touches on the ball followed by a hard shot. 2-0 to the Vikings.
The second half was no more than a few minutes old when Stabel beat the offside trap, dribbled around the keeper, and slotted in the 3-0 goal. Cosmo striker Leslie watching from the sideline was seen smiling but his eyes showed signs of worry. 1TM looked completely devastated after that goal and especially the defensive players were walking back with the heads hanging. However, 1TM proved themselves as an excellent Vets team as they fought their way back into the game. A corner sailed over the Viking defense but was picked up before the Vikings could clear. The 1TM winger passed the ball back to a midfielder waiting just outside the box, who made a controlled first timer that saw the ball sail into the far corner. Very nice goal from 1TM to make it 3-1.
The Vikings remained composed and stuck to the game plan. The defense was excellent with Stereo, Rafa, and Just giving no chances away. Moberg put in a tremendous amount of running and disturbed the 1TM attacking play enough to prevent dangerous passes being made. The wings also looked healthy with Staal/Kalle/Morten/Moeller/Crone all doing lots of good runs.
As 1TM pressed very high on the pitch they were vulnerable against counter attacks. Unfortunately the referee decided on at least three wrong offside rulings, with the one on Marck being the worst. Even the 1TM defender had to put on a facial expression of someone that had just checked out a hot chick walking by and then realizing that the wife had seen it all.
With about twenty minutes a Viking ball was passed up the right side. The little skillful 1TM defender looked to be in full control but John decided to chase and was slowly reducing the gap. The defender prepared to pass the ball back to the keeper but John had read the situation and ran on the inside and overpowered the defender. John sprinted towards goal with the ball with the defender trailing behind. The keeper rushed out, John dribbled to the left, and with defenders sliding left and right he controlled the ball and kicked it into the empty net. An incredible action by the league top goal scorer. Most likely all opponent defenders are happy that John is not 15 years younger, an age that would still qualify him as a Vets player.
1TM needed to score but constantly exposed themselves in the back. Once again John made a perfect run to beat the offside trap. With a defender chasing John made it into the box, pulled inside, and the defender stumbled into the back of John. The unexpected connection made John fall and unfortunately he landed on the shoulder. Clear penalty but the whistle kept silent. The game was paused for several minutes as John was unable to continue and had to be escorted off the pitch. The scanning proved our worst fears; a dislocated shoulder.
The highly competitive game ended 4-1. Both teams played very well and as the table shows; 1TM and Vikings Vets are the two best teams in the league.
