After dropping two points last week the Vikings were motivated to get back on track with three points.
Coach Crone had a strong squad to his disposal and when the keeper for the night cancelled he was confident enough not to call CJ, who lived a stone throw away from the pitch, and instead put defender Hax in goal.
Starting line up:
Anders F / Just / Mark vD / Moeller
Leslie / Tomas / Toenne / Jesper
Bench: Buck, Birch, Magnus, Crone
Basically a disgusting offensive line up from the Vikings and with lots of experience in the back, only with Anders adding some youthful energy.
The Vikings started aggressively with Jesper and Leslie creating havoc on the wings. Meanwhile, Toenne and Tomas displayed boy band moves on the midfield and fed Meli with sugar balls. The Playground Rivals keeper did well in getting off his line to prevent several dangerous situations. It was, however, just a matter of time before someone, with the odds pointing in Meli’s direction, would break the deadlock.
The Playground Rivals actually played very well and made good use of their fast wingers. The Viking back four looked solid though and Mark vD proved that there is some Japp Stam hidden in him.
The Vikings kept pushing for a goal and Meli started warming up with a few shots just outside the goal posts. Also Leslie got close but the keeper showed quality.
Playground Rivals continued to play their wings successfully and Vikings had to give away several corners. The crosses kept flying into the box but strong defensive headers from Toenne especially kept Hax unemployed for the time being.
Next action saw Mark vD clear a ball in defense and Meli, like a clever fox, beat the offside trap and in full green jersey speed reached the ball before the keeper and made a cool finish to make it 1-0 for the Vikings.
Meli, now warm, followed up with a signature move as he out-sprinted two defenders, and pulled inside to prepare a shot, and exactly as planned he was fouled inside the box by the defender not expecting Meli's change of direction. Clear penalty. Like a true striker he stepped up himself and made it 2-0.
Second half started with Playground Rivals having a bit of a come back. Their striker did well to control the ball and he managed to get himself free to fire a shot of thunder towards goal. Hax, nimble as a bumblebee, jumped backwards and caught the ball safely. Although Hax claimed everything was under control it still looked like a scene from Shaolin soccer.
The Vikings soon gained control again and the Playground Rivals especially looked challenged in defense. Luckily their keeper had a good day in the office with several critical saves. Yet, the pressure was on and Meli made an amazing flat pass to Leslie, who with slotted the ball with a strong finish.
The Playground Rivals played well, strong offensive game, but little did it matter when their defense let Meli steal their candy over and over. When Buck saw Meli steal the ball from the last defender he knew what was going to happen. Buck ran from his left wing position all the way into the box, in a perfect position to receive the pass from Meli. Nonetheless, Meli decided to score himself. 100% striker. Rumor has it that the echo from Buck screaming for the pass can still be heard at the Centaur stadium.
Last goal came from a Viking corner when Meli, amazingly unmarked, headed it in to 5-0. Jesper wanted some last minute action also, like whenever he visits Lulus, as he went on a solo run and only just missed the goal with an otherwise good attempt, again similar to his Lulus experiences.
Obviously the disgusting Viking offensive line up made it difficult for the Playground Rivals but they actually played a very good game. They had almost a dozen corners or free kicks in the Viking half and with a bit of luck the score line may have looked different. The Viking defense, however, was rock solid and the large bench also helped in keeping the pace high all the game throughout.
